Tuesday, 4th of October, us children had the privilege of being whisked away from our school books by our gorgeous god'mum' Joyce, to do an educational outing to Wells. Wells is a cathedral city in the Mendip district of Somerset.

We went to the Wells Cathedral and 'Wells and Mendip' museum.

The Wells cathedral has many interesting carved stone faces. The sculptors distorted some of the faces, by making bigger facial features, i.e. the lips and ear, or making the tongue stick out. There are many beautiful stained glass windows. It has the famous Wells clock, which is considered to be the second oldest clock mechanism in Britain and it still works! The clock indicates the time using a 24-hour analogue dial. The minutes and phases of the moon are also shown on the clock. Above it on the right is a figure who hits a bell with a hammer on the hour. Every 15 minutes a set of jousting knights chase each other. The visit to the cathedral was fascinating.

The Wells and Mendip museum has lots of information about the Cathedral and history of the city. They have a trench model that we could walk through with sounds effects so that we could feel what it was like in the Second World War.

A fantastic day to spend a school day out!
