Wednesday, 28 December 2016: The drive from Anguillara Sabazia on the southern bank of Lago di Bracciano takes us an hour to reach the centre of Rome. We are blessed when we miss a turn-off according to the SAT-NAV and are then directed by two elderly Romans to a very suitable parking area approximately 700m from the Colosseo (Colosseum). Around 11am we join the queue to enter the Colosseum. Various tour guides try to entice us to make use of their services, hereby trying to skip the '2 hour' queue (according to them) which we prove to only take us 30 minutes. The wander through 2 levels of the 'gladiator ring' takes us 2 hours. Our ticket includes an additional entry which allows a visit to the Foro Romano (Roman Forum) and Palatino (Palatine Hill). After a stroll through this park/area full of ancient ruins, we exit and walk to the Vittoriano, which is free to enter.
Our last point of visit is the Piazza San Pietro. Time and finances do not allow us to enter the Citta del Vaticano (the Vatican). Our journey back takes us along the riverbank of the Tevere to our parking directly above the Circo Massimo.
Merzy awaits us with a well deserved drink. We leave Rome as the sun disappears. The 45 minutes drive out of Rome to our camper-stop in Albano Laziale flies by and we chill out for a welcome rest. We discuss/compare the stiffness and aches of the different parts of our bodies. Our opinion... Rome is definitely worth a visit! One can easily spend a few more days there without seeing the same attraction twice.
