Snow-capped Mountains and Spectacular Lakes

8 April 2017, Saturday: After a refreshing shower, we study the map and opt for the less travelled roads, which takes us over the beautiful Jaun Pass. The scenery is breath-taking with snow-capped mountain peaks, contour rivers and lush green hills. It feels like we’ve entered the fairy-tale world of Heidi and Peter. The road takes us around the picturesque lakes, Thunersee and Brienzersee. We stop for the day above Sarnersee, the lake at Giswil. We have our first barbeque on tour which goes down well. Dad braais steak kebabs and we make carrot salad. We start a little fire, which turns into a bonfire. Nobody seems to mind (except mum), so we carry on piling the fire. It’s a lovely evening with the moon out, fire going and guitar strumming, reminding us of home… and we enjoy the moment. 9 April 2017, Sunday: We are fully rejuvenated when we leave our quiet stop. Our target for today is the Rhine falls. Along the way we pass Lake Luzern (Vierwald stättersee) and go through Zurich. We stop for lunch around 13:30 and by 3:00 we reach the Rhine Falls. What we thought would be a quick sightsee, turns out to be a 3 hour walk. We start off at the Schloss, go over the bridge at the top of the falls, walk alongside the river and work our way back on the opposite side of the river at a leisurely pace. We view the falls from all angles. Genève picks up a ticket which allows us to gain access to the foot of the waterfall. We are thrilled and very thankful. The pictures of the Rhine Falls does not do this tourist attraction justice. It is well worth the visit. When we get back to Merzy, we seek a quieter spot and end up in Singen, Germany. Bye-bye Switzerland. 10 April 2017, Monday: This morning as we leave, we take the road running along the Northern side of the Bodensee. We stop for lunch at a camper-stop in Lindenberg. We do a shop at Aldi and give in to the temptation of the German delicatessen (a lot better value for money here). We carry on to the next camper stop in Immenstadt where we fill up before heading to our final destination high in the mountains in the middle of nowhere which Emile found for us. We take a single lane road up into the mountains and all agree that this is the place where we want to sleep tonight. Snow about 400m up, sun a few light-years away shining down on us, and we are all still in our T-shirts. We are grateful!

We go to sleep with a spectacular show of lightning in the distance on the one side of the camper and the moon shining faithfully on the other side.
