14 May 2017, Sunday: Today we complete the 7km journey to Monemvasia. The town is located on a small island that is linked to the mainland by a short causeway of 200 metres. We park Merzy on the island under a tree and start our walk into Monemvasia, a Medieval Castle Town carved on the slopes of a rock. The island is about 300 metres wide and a kilometre long and rises on a plateau a hundred metres above sea level. On the slope of this plateau lies Monemvasia. This romantic walled town, nestled below a towering rock, is a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history dating back to the 13th century. After a thorough tour through this town (up and down the town walls as well) we make our way back down to Merzy and leave the island. We stop to buy bread for lunch and then continue to our stop for the night approximately 9km north of Monemvasia. We park Merzy a few metres away from the Mediterranean Sea, have lunch and decide to call it a day. After wishing our Ouma and Granny for Mother’s day, we prepare to have a nice braai. Emile gathers wood (enough for a decent bonfire) and we start with toasted marshmallows (our dessert first). Dad braais pork kebabs and chicken. It’s supplemented with butter-garlic potatoes and a green salad. It is truly one of the most gorgeous evenings outside and we scoff our food round the fire. 15 May 2017, Monday: Dad discovers a shower that we missed the previous day and fill up with water before leaving our gorgeous spot. We stop along the way at a mountain stream for lunch. We cross over the mountain to the other side of the finger and park at Agios Andréas harbour next to a camper from Czech Republic. Dad, Emile and Genève head off fishing and come back with 4 medium(?!) sized mullet which Dad and Genève have for supper. Emile has a bite, but due to their size, generously offers his to Dad. The rest of us opt for tuna pasta. 16 May 2017, Tuesday: Today we set off to Nafplio where we do a ‘Lidl’ shop before we stop to explore the Old Town. Nafplio sits on a small port beneath the towering Palamidi fortress. It is graced with attractive narrow sreets, elegant Venetian houses, quayside cafes and Bougainvillea trees adorning the narrow cobblestone alleys and balconies. The most photographed spot of Nafplio is Bourtzi, the Venetian small fortress standing on the rocky islet of Agioi Theodoroi. Afterwards we have lunch and head off to our stop at the beach near Salánti.
